Testing Electronic Regulators

Electronic regulators are usually very reliable unless they have been accidently wired up with the wrong polarity. Sometimes if there is a charging problem, a quick test on the regulator could eliminate the regulator as being the cause of the problem.

These pictures illustrate how we at The Magneto Guys test dynamos wired with 'shunt' configuration. (See the Dynamo Configuration page in the Technical section for more details)

The LED is a dual red/green bi-directional LED and the two resistors are 150 ohm, 1/2  watt.

This design of test box only works with regulators designed for use with dynamos wired with 'shunt' configuration. It can be used for testing positive and negative earth versions of both 6 or 12 volt regulators.
