Magneto Static Timing Light

The very best performance from an engine can only be obtained if the ignition timing is correctly set. Over-advanced ignition will make the engine difficult to start and will refuse to run evenly at low speeds. In extreme cases, pre-ignition may occur which will rapidly destroy the piston crown(s). Retarded ignition can result in overheating, sluggish performance, poor fuel consumption and starting may become more difficult.

This Magneto Static Timing Light uses a custom designed electronic circuit and an LED indicator to show exactly when the points are starting to open. This makes setting the ignition timing an easy, precise operation. This magneto static timing light works on all types of magneto and battery/coil ignition circuits too .

Why can’t I use a piece of cigarette paper between the points?
Well, you can – but you need an extra hand to tell when the paper has come loose and will never be as accurate as this Magneto Static Timing Light. The LED will be on when the points are open and will be off when they are closed – it’s as simple as that!
Why can’t a simple battery and bulb be used to do the same job?
In a magneto ignition circuit the points, condenser and primary winding of the magneto armature are all in parallel. Current in a circuit will always flow via the easiest path. This will be through the primary winding if the points are open, or through both the primary winding and the points if they are closed. Either way, current will flow and the bulb will stay on whether the points are open or not! Try it and see!

Yes, the battery and bulb method can be used if the points assembly centre fixing bolt is removed first. This will disconnect the primary winding from the circuit. However, it is highly likely that the points assembly will come loose from it's taper without the bolt holding it - use this Magneto Static Timing Light instead and leave the whole assembly alone!

Overseas sales always welcome! Please check IMPORTANT NOTES FOR OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS

* Overseas Customers: We have been having some problems sending our Magneto Static Timing Lights overseas  The package is usually returned to us marked as 'Suspected dangerous goods - return to sender'. We are led to believe that this is because batteries are fitted. The decision has therefore been made to stop fitting batteries to any timing light destined for overseas.  We have to ask the purchaser to supply and fit them. What is saved by not supplying the batteries is reflected in the cost of the product which does include tracked overseas delivery.

The Magneto Static Timing Light requires three AA Batteries. They are the most commonly used battery worldwide and found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC Codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for AA alkaline and HR6 for NiMH rechargeable batteries. Each AA battery is 51mm long and 14mm in diameter with a nominal voltage of 1.5V – slightly less for rechargeable batteries.
